As fall approaches, and the traditional “season” begins, the cultural community is beginning to shrug off the summer and gear up for great events. If the earthquake or Irene didn’t get you moving last week, this week The Grand Prix is sure to start us off with a bang.
At GBCA, one big program we’re gearing up for is the 2012 Baker Artist Awards which we administer on behalf of the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund. The site goes live on October 1, and artists from across the greater Baltimore region will be able to self nominate themselves for one of three $25,000 Mary Sawyers Baker prizes. The deadline will be January 15, 2012. Additionally, this year The Baker Fund will award nine $1,000 b-grants to local artists. Those awards will be announced in November, December, and January, and artists must be on the Baker Artist Awards site to be eligible.
From September 7 to October 2, the BMA is celebrating the Baker Artist Awards with an exhibition of works by the three 2011 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize winners: visual artist Gary Kachadourian, performance artist Audrey Chen, and beatboxer and vocal percussionist Shodekeh. The exhibition will culminate in a free late night closing party, which will feature performances by Audrey Chen, Shodekeh, and others, on Saturday, October 1 from 7-11pm.
Seven satellite exhibitions are occurring in September and October throughout the region to celebrate the amazing local talent in the Baltimore region as seen on the Baker Artist Awards site.
