Executive Director’s Letter
January 15, 2013
You haven’t forgotten anything have you? Keys, pen, or perhaps your Baker Artists Award Nomination????
There is still time to nominate yourself, but only until midnight tonight. If you are an artist of any discipline, we want to see you up there on the site! Starting tomorrow, preparations will be underway for the selection of the 2013 Mary Sawyers Baker Prizes, so don’t miss out.
What a time in Baltimore! Yesterday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake cut the ribbon at the new Everyman Theatre and kicked off a weeklong celebration. The new 250-seat venue is a treasure not only for Everyman, but also for the City of Baltimore. Close on the heels of this success, we are eagerly watching developments at the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company on Calvert Street and Single Carrot Theatre on Howard Street. All are great examples of how investments in cultural organizations can impact communities and contribute to the vibrancy of our region.
But all of this doesn’t happen without the support of the community and its philanthropic partners. I hope you saw the Baltimore Sun piece on noted philanthropists in Baltimore. While all have made tremendous contributions, Eddie and Sylvia Brown have had a game-changing impact on the cultural landscape. For this we are extremely grateful.
With the economy limping along, it’s not so easy anywhere for artists. For a little inspiration, take a look at the resiliency of our artistic brothers and sisters in Spain.
All the very best,
